Tarkett Meets Sustainable Targets for Peterborough City Hospital

Environmental concerns have been at the top of the agenda during construction of Peterborough’s brand new £335m City Hospital complex. As well as protecting the great crested newts found nearby and re-routing a cycle path, the new build also implemented a sustainable construction plan in order to meet BREEAM targets for healthcare buildings.

“Tarkett were one of only two manufacturers at the time, whose products met the relevant BRE A rating criteria for vinyl flooring,” explained Chris Fairhall of Brookfield Construction UK Ltd, who carried out the construction, “but we chose Tarkett because they were also able to guarantee recycling of waste from site through their own recycling plants, and the majority of their new vinyl products have an average of 25% recycled content” added Chris.

The Peterborough City Hospital complex comprises a 612-bed acute hospital, a 102-bed mental health facility and a 34-bed integrated care centre. Facilities include a high-tech diagnostics unit, women and children’s unit, cancer unit, specialist rehabilitation centre, renal dialysis and a multi-disciplinary training centre.

Tarkett’s broad range of floorcoverings enabled them to meet all the varying requirements for the complex, from anti-static flooring for theatres, through to specialist sports flooring for the rehabilitation and fitness facilities. Their environmental credentials, choice of colour schemes and availability were also important factors, as was their adaptability to changing requirements as the development progressed.

AC Flooring Ltd have installed over 73,000m2 of Tarkett’s Eclipse Premium to circulation areas and wards throughout the complex. Eclipse is a hard-wearing, homogeneous vinyl with a harmonious design, balanced raw material content and good maintenance properties. Thanks to the PUR reinforcement, Eclipse needs no wax or polish for life and is easy to clean and maintain.
To provide safety underfoot within wet areas, such as toilets and washrooms, two of Tarkett’s Safetred safety floorings were specified. Safetred Spectrum and Universal are both heavy duty, slip resistant vinyl floors that combine attractive design with ease of maintenance, featuring Tarkett’s Safety Clean PUR reinforcement.

For the waiting areas within the new hospital, Tarkett’s Acczent Wood was chosen to create a more homely, relaxed feel. This compact vinyl has a glass fibre non-woven reinforcement giving it exceptional dimensional stability. Tarkett’s new generation PUR reinforcement, Topclean XP, gives Acczent Wood extreme resistance to scratches, abrasions, scuffing, soiling and staining in addition to easy, low cost maintenance with a no wax, no polish for life finish.

Other specialist flooring includes Tarkett’s Anti-Static floorcovering for the operating theatres and Tapiflex 164, an acoustic flooring, for the children’s play areas. Tarkett’s Omnisport Training provides a professional sports surface for the rehabilitation centre, and fitness facilities within the Integrated Care Centre and the Mental Health Unit.

A key aspect of the flooring installations at Peterborough was the collection and recycling of off-cuts and waste materials. Tim Hill of AC Flooring has worked with Tarkett on several previous projects and commented: “Tarkett have an excellent recycling service. They supply cages and/or bags for us to collect waste materials in and they usually co-ordinate collection of full bags with fresh deliveries to site to minimise transportation costs. We’re delighted to be working with them again at Peterborough.”

To date, over 90 tonnes of waste and off-cuts has been collected from site. This is returned to Tarkett’s factory at Lenham in Kent, where it is sorted and consolidated to ensure all material sent for recycling is suitable for processing. Materials are then loaded for transportation to Tarkett’s own recycling plant at Clervaux, Luxembourg, where they are re-processed into backings for new flooring.
