Terminal 1, London Heathrow Airport

Terminal 1, London Heathrow Airport

Client: British Airports Authority
Contractor: Taylor Woodrow Construction
Type of works: supply and installation of safety barriers and pedestrian handrails in car park refurbishment programme.

A major refurbishment of car parks at the Heathrow Airport complex involved nearly 2km of Berry Systems barriers. The in-house design team at the British Airports Authority specified the unique Flexi-Post mounting system with handrail extensions and anti-climb mesh. These flexible floor mounted posts can be used to absorb impacts of up to 10 tonnes. Special adaptations were included to customize the system to fit the individual requirements of the short stay car park facility for Terminals 1 and 2. This involved the design of special handrail units to fit around the lighting columns. Following the success of this project, refurbishment at other Heathrow car parks is progressing.

Berry Systems supplied:

  • 949m of Berry Beam mounted on Flexi-Posts at 1,500mm centres. Special handrail extensions and upper framed mesh panels. 1,100mm high overall.
  • 1,006m of Berry Beam mounted on Flexi-Posts at 750mm centres. Special handrail extensions and upper framed mesh panels.
    1,100mm high overall.
  • 24 Special handrail units to protect lighting columns.
