Located in the heart of Douglas’s financial district, The Courthouse is a standout example of architectural transformation. Once a Grade II listed courthouse, the building has been thoughtfully reimagined into one of the Isle of Man’s most prestigious bar and restaurant venues.

Originally opened in 2009, The Courthouse quickly gained recognition as a leading entertainment venue on the island. But with time, competition grew and the space was in need of a bold redesign to restore its reputation and functionality.

The client required a multifunctional interior that could operate as a vibrant nightclub and bar by night and transition into a conference and meeting venue during the day.

Design Concept & Application
Interior design studio Rehab Squared was commissioned to develop the new concept, which placed the Hanex Solid Surface at the centre of the design. The result is a visually striking, geometric solid surface bar, fabricated using Hanex N-White (S-008).

Hanex was chosen for:
• Its seamless join capabilities, allowing for large, monolithic structures
• The ability to create sharp, angular forms
• Its durability and low-maintenance finish, essential for high-traffic hospitality settings

Designer Insight
Gemma Wasley of Rehab Squared explains:
“We ground-recessed continuous IM66-rated LED profiles into the concrete floor, following the bar’s curves and sharp angles. This allowed for a vertical sheet of diffused uplight to be cast across the façade. Combined with suspended lighting above, the Hanex bar and its chiaroscuro effect are shown off to maximum impact — creating the illusion of the solid surface being lit from within. RGBW triangular strip lights above the dance floor further enhance the geometric feel of the space to stunning effect.”

Recognition
The Courthouse solid surface bar design was shortlisted for a 2020 Mondo DR Award, a global award programme that celebrates the best in audiovisual and lighting design from across the world.
