The Deck, National Theatre, London

Client: National Theatre
Architect: IGLOOS in-house design team
Type of works: design and installation of unisex WCs, in addition to other sanitary fittings.

The brief was to design and construct a luxury washroom that would be positioned on top of one of the theatre's largest roof spaces for a new event space called The Deck. As a Grade II* listed building, the design had to be sympathetic and not detract from the building's exterior.

IGLOOS provided an ideal solution in meeting the high standards of design and installation required. As a result of the building's Grade II* listing, the designated area for the washroom was required to be part of an overhang next to the new events area, limiting the space and shape available to work within.

The application of The Deck as an events space required a luxurious and durable design to accommodate the clientele that were expected to be the end users.

IGLOOS designed two unisex WCs, positioned either side of a central vanity unit, with one WC designed to comply with the approved Document M of the Building Regulations 2000 and BS 8300:2001 for disabled users.

Using a non-porous Dark Grey slate-style tile, IGLOOS ensured the flooring would maintain its high-quality finish from one event to the next, despite the potentially high footfall in a very small area.

The walls were created using moisture-resistant panels, finished in Off White, which sits well with the 100% natural oak cupboards and trims.

Infra-red taps were the preferred choice because of their advantageous non-touch hygiene aspects, along with their water-saving abilities.

The oak cupboards incorporated polished concealed handles and each area includes box lighting, also created out of natural oak. All the joinery was carried out by IGLOOS on site, ensuring a crisp, clean finish.

A spokesman at the National Theatre said: “IGLOOS were very helpful, efficient and approachable from our initial conversations to completion. They really helped us develop a practical solution to an unusual site and the finished toilets are of a very high standard.”
