The Granville Park Adult Learning Centre, Lewisham, London

Client: Lewisham Borough Council
Type of works: supply of glass treatment to ensure visibility in compliance with current regulations.

Solar Shield was commissioned by Lewisham Borough Council, to make the glass partitioning within their brand new state-of-the-art adult education facility visible and ensure compliance with health, safety and building regulations.

Regulation 14 of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations exists to protect anyone working or spending time near glass from injury by broken glass, whether accidental, impact, vandalism or even terrorist attack. Building Regulations Part M states that uninterrupted glazing in critical areas must be clearly marked and therefore instantly recognisable as a barrier.

‘Critical location’ is the term given to describe internal and external walls, doors and partitioning which are of primary concern in terms of glazing safety. Between the finished floor level and 1,500mm (shoulder height), above that level in doors, and in side panels which fall within 300mm of either edge of the door.

Solar Shield produced a collection of imaginative designs, in dusted and frosted crystal. These were applied to the glass corridors surrounding the courtyard, consequently preventing accidental collision for staff and visitors in the future, upgrading the glass and transforming the courtyard into a vibrant environment.

Solar Shield offers a wide selection of designs to meet every requirement. From simple dots, stripes and waves to company logos, a full spectrum of colours is available in a range of finishes.
