Timber canopy for Ysgol Pen Rhos

Timber canopy for Ysgol Pen Rhos

Broxap provided a timber canopy with weather screens for Ysgol Pen Rhos in Llanelli.

This new build school on the former Copper Works at Nevill’s Dock, Llanelli required a series of outdoor canopies.

Broxap were invited along with others by T. Richard Jones(BETWS) Ltd. to supply ideas for these distinctive style canopies. Broxap were deemed the best design and most cost effective solution to providing canopies that were close enough to the architectural vision for the school.

The main school canopy at 50500mm long features clear 8.8mm laminated glass in patent glazing bars with a mill finish.

The main supports are comprised of FSC Larch timber with grade 316 stainless steel baseplates and connecting plates which are submerged beneath ground level.

This timber canopy also features weather screens which consisted of a timber frame with PETg inserted within the frame, these are positioned to the front of the canopy and mounted 500mm above ground level and secured with aluminium capex bars.

Guttering is constructed of pressed aluminium at the rear of the canopy and flows to downpipes within the building. Roofing beams are pitched at 5 degrees.

For the canopy at the ‘Flying Start’ early years area of the school the same materials were used however the canopy columns were simply straight leg in style and wrapped with a blue protective pad on each column.
