Top industry award goes to SuperLow Carbon

SuperLow-Carbon asphalt was chosen as Product of the Year at the Highways Awards 2022.

Developed with Shell Construction and Road, it is the first commercially available product using a biogenic binder that effectively acts as a carbon sink.

The evolution began by reducing the embodied carbon footprint of our asphalts: improving production processes, using alternative energy sources, and mixing at reduced temperatures.

SuperLow-Carbon includes a biogenic material within the bitumen that effectively locks carbon within the asphalt rather than releasing it back into the atmosphere. The use of these biogenic components in SuperLow-Carbon means that CO2 remains within the asphalt even when it is recycled.

The product has been successfully used in a range of projects including the National Highways’ £9.5m A590 Cross-A-Moor improvement scheme in Ulverston, Cumbia where an innovative low-carbon solution was required.

Thomas Edgcumbe, Managing Director for Surfacing Solutions at Aggregate Industries, said: “As a company we’re extremely proud that SuperLow-Carbon has been named as Product of the Year.

“Working with Shell Construction and Road we produced the first super reduced carbon asphalt in a bid to help decarbonise the road construction process as well as extend the lifetime of roadways once laid.

“It is all part of our drive at Aggregate Industries to be a net-zero company by at least 2050. So, for it to be recognised in this way nationally is a great accolade.”

The Highways Awards, sponsored by Highways Magazine, is an annual awards in its 19th year which celebrates the highways industry.
