Top tips for working with EWI this winter

Top tips for working with EWI this winter

We all know that winter can often bring additional challenges to the construction industry and particularly for those trying to complete outdoor tasks such as external wall insulation systems (EWI).

Phill Mattatia, National Sales Manager, at Dryvit talks about the top 5 tips for working with EWI in the winter months.

1. Plan Ahead
Working in winter can be challenging. Make sure you plan to ensure you have the right equipment, supplies and clothing – this includes your coffee!

2. Be aware of the temperature
Dryvit systems have a working temperature range of 1°C to 35°C. It is very important that render products are not applied to frozen surfaces and that surfaces are always protected from rain or frost for a minimum of 48 hours after the application, whilst the render is fully curing. Drying times may vary and be prolonged in colder conditions, always speak to a member of the technical team at Dryvit ahead of a winter installation.

3. Check the weather forecast
At Dryvit, they recommend between the months of November to early April that it is worthwhile to plan and check the expected weather conditions in advance to starting any EWI project.

4. Keep substrates dry
This is a key thing to remember within the winter months! A wet substrate can prove problematic with adhesion and bonding due to the lack of suction, weakness, and reduced bond for the render. Their technical team are here to support with all enquires. If you have a surface which has become saturated and appears dry of the surface, you may be faced with potential problems.

5. Choose the right products
Make sure you have the right product before you begin. Dryvit systems are specified in accordance with project requirements, timings, and regulations.

Have you heard about Dryvit’s FD PMR – formulated to skin over quicker than your standard render product and suitable for application in one degrees and rising temperatures, this product protects the render from light rain and drizzle in winter months.

Dryvit projects should always be installed in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations and specifications should be followed.
