A challenging, steeply sloping garden is being transformed into an accessible and usable outdoor space with the help of Kedel recycled plastic lumber.

Covering just under a quarter of an acre, the garden rises steeply from the rear of the property and was previously dominated by sycamore, briar and gorse. Existing timber-framed steps providing access to a decked area had also repeatedly suffered from rot, prompting the homeowners to look for a more durable alternative.

With access preventing the use of heavy machinery for conventional terracing, the solution was to create a network of pathways and steps through the garden. Following advice from Kedel, recycled plastic products were selected to provide a long-lasting alternative to timber that will not rot.

Creating Durable Paths and Steps

Kedel recycled plastic posts and boards have been used throughout the project to construct paths, steps and retaining structures, helping to provide improved access across the difficult terrain.

As the transformation has progressed, larger recycled plastic lumber profiles have also been incorporated where greater quantities of earth needed to be retained, helping to create new level areas within the garden.

Further additions have included new pathways into previously inaccessible areas, steps leading to the existing deck and a recycled plastic boardwalk. Kedel lumber has also been used to create a raised outdoor bar incorporating a fire pit, extending the material beyond purely structural landscaping applications.

Opening Up the Garden

The improved network of paths and steps is gradually making more of the garden accessible while allowing established sycamore and ivy to remain in place to help stabilise the steep site.

As access improves, the homeowners are able to better manage the existing vegetation and introduce selected trees and shrubs, creating a garden designed to continue developing over the years ahead.

The project demonstrates how Kedel's recycled plastic products can provide a durable, low-maintenance alternative to traditional timber for landscaping projects where resistance to rot and long-term performance are key considerations.
