Type of works: supply of axial flow fans.

The construction of Line 1 of the Turin Metro continues and Fläkt Woods has once again won the contract to supply the Turin underground system with a custom-made ventilation solution.

The new line which will connect Porta Nuova to Lingotto will consist of 6 stations and 3,900m of tunnel. Work on this project commenced in April 2006 and is scheduled to finish in 2010. In addition to the 44 fans Fläkt Woods has already supplied, this new order will comprise 24 truly reversible axial flow fans with diameters of 1,400, 1,600 and 1,800mm. In each station and tunnel shaft 2 fans will be installed in parallel.

Fläkt Woods S.p.A. will supply diffusers, silencers and dampers. The fans all have 4 pole motors suitable for inverter control with motor powers of 127, 54 and 43kW and are suitable for operation in emergency for smoke extract at a temperature of 250°C/2h. Volume flows range from 210,000 m³/h in the tunnel ventilation shafts and between 80,000 m³/h and 95,000 m³/h in the stations with static pressures from 700 to 1,000Pa. This new project was won because of the trust the client has in Fläkt Woods and on the long years of experience in supplying packaged solutions for metro and railway stations in Italy and the world. A key factor however was the ability to provide the first delivery of 6 1.8m fans in only 2 months.

The metro will use the VAL (Automated Light Vehicle) system, with automated controlled trains capable of carrying up to 440 passengers. There is a train every 2 minutes in peak hours and every 4/6 minutes during the remaining operating period. This will mean 15,000 people per hour can be transported in both directions. Trains and stations are equipped with video surveillance and smoke detection systems that, together with the absence of closed spaces and an intercom system linked to the Command and Control Point (PCC), will guarantee maximum safety for users.
