Inspire: Tweedbank is an initiative spearheaded by Scottish Borders Council with the aim of advancing digital education across the region.
The project involved the transformation of an existing structure into a forward-thinking learning environment, distinct from any other educational facility in the area. Its core mission is to bridge the gap between individuals and digital technologies by offering a flexible space for teaching digital skills through varied learning approaches.
The design centers around versatility, featuring multiple open teaching zones without physical partitions. As Gordon Brown from the council explains:
"Given the open-plan nature of the learning environment, where focused work is often required, achieving effective acoustics was vital to reduce distractions and support concentration."
The space includes a media theatre, workshop, computer lab, and a dedicated comfort zone — each designed to support diverse teaching methods tailored to user needs. Strategic use of furniture ensures a clear line of sight throughout, enhancing the space’s openness and sense of inclusion.
This collaborative project was led by SBC Architects in close partnership with their education clients and SBC Contracts, the internal construction arm of the council.
"We opted for Ecophon due to their proven performance, product diversity, adaptability, and their deep understanding of acoustics, which helped shape the ideal acoustic design and product selection."
Ecophon’s acoustic solutions played a significant role both functionally and aesthetically. A variety of their products - including Ecophon Solo Matrix, Ecophon Solo™ Rectangle, Ecophon Solo Baffle, and Ecophon Solo Freedom - were integrated into the design. In some areas, these were creatively paired with contrasting ceiling elements such as greenery and metal mesh, producing a visually compelling result.
The outcome has been widely praised, showcasing the high standard of design and execution that Scottish Borders Council can achieve.
