Project: Harpenden House – Harpenden AL5 1FA
Project Type: Ramp Heating
Location: Harpenden – Hertfordshire
Construction: Concrete base- Heated driveway mats – Block paving
System: Bespoke manufactured heated driveway mats
Size: 35 metre long ramp
Power: 6 x 4455w bespoke heated driveway mats
The residential project, built on the site of a former hotel, features a two-lane ramp leading down to an underground parking area. Due to the steep gradient of the ramp, a reliable snow and ice melting system was essential to ensure safe and convenient access for residents throughout the year, regardless of weather conditions.
To address this, HDS designed and installed a snow and ice melting system consisting of four heated tracks, each measuring 0.6 meters wide, along the 35-meter-long ramp. These tracks are strategically placed to cover the primary paths of vehicle tires, ensuring safe passage while avoiding the need to heat the entire width of the ramp. This design choice significantly reduces both power consumption and operating costs, making the solution energy-efficient and cost-effective.
The system operates using the HDS fully automatic ice and snow melting control. This advanced control system is equipped with two ground moisture sensors and one air temperature sensor, which work together to detect conditions that may lead to ice or snow accumulation. The automated controls ensure that the system activates only when necessary, further optimizing energy usage and maintaining a safe environment for residents year-round.
