Unique Broxap rainbow canopies for Swindon Primary School

Unique rainbow canopies installed at a new primary school are helping to inspire and enthuse pupils.

Named after celebrated designer William Morris, the Swindon school wanted to reflect the life and work of the craftsman throughout the new building.

The radical designer was a revolutionary force in Victorian Britain, initiating the Arts and Crafts movement which placed a greater value on how things were made and decorated in the late 19th Century.

And the colourful bespoke canopies, designed and manufactured by Broxap, are certainly proving a talking point.

Working with Willmott Dixon Construction, Broxap supplied a series of tailor-made products based on the duo pitch canopy range, including guttering and downpipes and galvanised framework finished to British and Euronorm standards.

These were crowned with polycarbonate sheets which allow multicoloured light to stream through.

As well as brightening up outdoor learning areas, the roof canopies support the multi-sensory learning strategy adopted by William Morris Primary School.

It was one of three new schools to open in Swindon in 2019 as part of moves to provide increased spaces for pupils as a number of towns expand.

The single-storey purpose-built school also features bright and vibrant classrooms with direct access to the outside space.

The canopies mirror the multi pitched roof design of the £7.8 million timber framed pod-link development.

Headteacher Jo Fraser says: “Our curriculum is creative and allows for children to explore in different ways – using hands on experiences and interesting stimuli. We believe in innovative teaching that engages pupils’ interests and inspires a love of learning. Life skills will ensure children are taught personal development and become all rounded citizens.”

The £44,000 works completed by Broxap included post protectors in P3305 Green while the structures and guttering were powder coated in RAL7016 Anthracite Grey.
