Cembonit cladding from Cembrit has been installed at London’s largest shopping centre, Westfield London. Supplied by Vivalda, London’s largest cutter/distributor of cladding, the Cembonit panels have been used on the facade of a new extension to Westfield.

Developed at a cost of £1.6bn, Westfield London opened in October 2008 with a retail floor area of 150,000m2. Vivalda was appointed by the Westfield London management company to find a cladding panel that would suit the library extension: it had to provide a good colour match but also satisfy the budget and weight requirements. Cembonit was able to satisfy each requirement with quick availability adding to its appeal.

“For any extension project it is always a challenge to match new cladding with existing,” comments Ricky Beadle, Sales Manager for Vivalda. “We were delighted to find that once we’d installed the Cembonit the panels very quickly blended with the surrounding finish. This gives us a seamless colour finish between the new library and the adjacent cladding.”

A total of 1,000m2 of sand-coloured Cembonit panels were installed by L&E Curtain Walling on the new extension. The sheets are characterized by their subtle, matt finish, and their resistance to staining and dirt, ensuring that the facade retains its appearance – an important feature for the Westfield London project. Cembonit panels are Cembrit’s most popular cladding. Cembonit is through-coloured. The finished project will retain its appearance better than coated claddings in the presence of weathering, abrasion and impact. Cembonit incorporates a unique impregnation treatment which protects the colour throughout the sheet and creates excellent resistance to moisture staining and airborne pollution.

Although primarily used on external facades (both exposed and semi-exposed) Cembonit has also been effectively used as an interior finish. It is produced from cement, sand, cellulose, wollastonite and sodium silicate and is impregnated with an aqueous, hydrophobic liquid, which provides the sheets with a water and dirt repellent surface. It is strong, durable and lightweight product and is an attractive, cost-effective and maintenance-free. It is also a Class 0 cladding panel, ideal for a variety of decorative cladding applications.
