Watertight concrete solution for Olympic-sized pool

Watertight concrete solution for Olympic-sized pool

BASF’s BS 8102 Type B watertight concrete solution has been used in an Olympic-sized swimming pool at a new £40 million school redevelopment at Queensferry High School in Edinburgh, Scotland.

840m3 worth of watertight concrete was needed for the project, involving three separate pours for the swimming pool base, at 1000mm depth.

The concrete design needed to provide sufficient consistence retention to ensure no cold joints were formed within the base. As the base was to be poured on a gradient, achieving the right consistence was essential.

MasterLife WP 799’s plasticizing properties allowed for the increase in the concrete consistence without the addition of more water.

The concrete was initially batched to a consistence of approximately 70mm; adding BASF MasterLife WP 799 increased the final pouring consistence to approximately 130mm/140mm, achieving the target water/cement ratio of 0.45.

MasterSeal 910 and 912 were used to eliminate the risk of water ingress through unavoidable construction joints.
