Why more housebuilders are choosing bathroom wall panels over tiles

We're all feeling the same pressures. Margins remain tight, build programmes continue to shrink, and specialist trades are becoming harder to secure. At the same time, developers face growing sustainability expectations, often creating competing priorities that place even more pressure on projects.

Every specification is being scrutinised; not simply on cost, but on the value it delivers. Small specification changes may seem insignificant in isolation but multiplied across hundreds of plots, they can unlock meaningful overall gains.

Bathroom wall finishes are a good example of where one specification change can deliver measurable benefits across an entire development.

While ceramic tiles remain a familiar choice, modern bathroom wall panels have evolved into a practical alternative that addresses modern construction challenges without compromising on appearance or performance.

A changing approach to bathroom specification

In the residential sector, bathroom wall panels are no longer viewed as an inferior product.

Advances in manufacturing allow modern panels to effortlessly replicate premium stone, marble, and tile finishes. This is combined with improved performance levels, which allow installers to achieve a fully waterproof, grout-free surface far faster and easier than tiling.

Just as importantly, contractor attitudes have shifted with using panels as part of their toolkit. Wetwall recently conducted a survey into the perception of bathroom wall panels with 99% stating they use panels as part of their everyday toolkit.

It's not that tiles no longer have a place, but modern wall panels offer distinct commercial and environmental advantages that become increasingly significant at scale.

Haste, without the waste.

Faster construction shouldn't come at the expense of sustainability. Fortunately, it doesn't have to.

Traditional tiling requires access to significant amounts of water for mixing adhesives and grouts, plus cleaning and washing tools. It might not seem like a lot in the context of tiling a single bathroom but across a national development of 17,000 homes, this equates to around one million litres of water.

Putting that into perspective, it’s roughly the equivalent of 5,000 bathtubs full of water. Additionally, this wastewater is often poured into site drainage, increasing the risk of blocked systems caused by cementitious residues and grout washings. Wall panels don’t require any water for installation which is an instant benefit on site.

Going a step further is the plastic wastage that goes unnoticed because it’s a fundamental part of the installation. Every tiled bathroom uses disposable spacers and wedges. Across large developments, those small plastic spacers quietly add up to millions of single-use components destined for landfill.

Aside from using a handful of spacers to check edges (which can be reused), panels don’t generate this level of plastic waste.

Faster installation. Fewer delays.

One of the biggest advantages of bathroom wall panels is speed.

Traditional tiling involves several stages from preparation to laying tiles (and then waiting for adhesives to cure before grouting and finishing). Project timelines are measured in days and any delays along the process can easily prevent other trades from progressing.

Wall panels simplify the process, with installation taking a little as half a day for a small bathroom. Large-format boards cover substantial wall areas in a single installation, with no grouting to apply or cure. Once installed and sealed, bathrooms are ready for the next phase of construction much sooner.

Across hundreds of plots, these time savings can have a significant impact on programme delivery. Installers recognise this benefit too, with 55% saying they switched to panels as it’s faster than tiling.

Reducing reliance on specialist trades

The shortage of specialist trades continues to challenge the construction industry, and experienced tilers are increasingly difficult to secure.

With experienced tilers in high demand, availability can become a bottleneck on large developments. Bathroom wall panels reduce that dependency, allowing competent bathroom installers and multi-skilled trades to complete installations efficiently without relying solely on specialist tilers.

Long-term value beyond handover

The benefits of wall panels continue long after handover. Grout remains one of the most common callback issues in tiled bathrooms, creating areas that can stain, discolour and encourage mould growth. By removing grout lines entirely, wall panels create bathrooms that are simpler for homeowners to maintain while reducing future maintenance requirements.

Repairs are also simpler. Damaged tiled walls often require a specialist tiler to remove and replace individual tiles. Panel systems can often be repaired more quickly, often requiring just a sealant refresh, which reduces disruption for occupants while helping maintenance teams’ action necessary remedial works far quicker.

Ready to switch?

There’s no silver bullet for solving industry-wide challenges. This is why incremental gains are so valuable. Switching a product or approach which can offer massive benefits at scale without affecting the day-to-day operations is key.

Bathroom wall panels are one such decision. By reducing installation time, easing pressure on specialist trades, cutting waste and simplifying long-term maintenance, they offer benefits that extend well beyond the bathroom itself.
