Wind Week, now in its fourth year, is the annual celebration of wind energy in the UK, organised by the industry’s trade association, RenewableUK. This year sees ten wind farms open up across the country, alongside a variety of other events including the launch of several offshore wind projects, visitors’ days at renewable energy companies’ offices, and a wind turbine in Leicester Square!

All these events are listed on the Embrace website at www.embracemyplanet.com. The site also includes details of the events running as part of the Scottish Renewables Festival.

The aim of Wind Week is to raise awareness of the role that wind plays in powering the UK, as well as to give people the chance to visit their local wind farm.

Adam Bell, Embrace Campaign Co-ordinator said: “Wind Week is a fantastic chance for everyone who’s interested in renewable energy to visit a wind farm and see what this technology is like. If you’ve heard that wind farms are noisy, if you’ve heard that they’re ugly – why not go and make up your own mind?"

“This year’s celebration comes at an interesting time. Across Europe there are 76GW of wind energy, powering millions of homes. But UK accounts for only 4.5GW, or 6% of that total. While we are making giant strides in harnessing offshore wind, there needs to be a clear sense that we have a huge untapped resource onshore. Wind Week is an opportunity for everyone to get behind this exciting project.”
