XPress Fittings Pass The Acid Test

Waveney had a client at a local animal feed mill in Norwich who needed fittings suitable for use with the acids lysine and methionine. The client had struggled to find a suitable sealer and threaded pipe work capable of containing these amino acids, which led Waveney to suggest XPress as a possible solution.

Prior to placing an order, Waveney contracts engineer Paul Gillman decided to put XPress fittings and seals to the acid test; “I conducted an experiment using a 28mm elbow,” said Paul, “I removed the EPDM seal and put both items in a pot of amino acid and awaited results.”

After several weeks, the seal and the elbow in Paul’s experiment were unaffected by the acid, which led Waveney to place an order for 100 metres of tube, 40 XPress elbows and various reducers and unions as required, ready for installation and delivery at the client’s facility. Now installation is complete, the work has proved a resounding success.

“The result was excellent,” said Paul, “installation time was less than half that of normal screwed pipe work and the seals are perfect. Not one leak – our customer is so impressed that we have been asked to fit more of this product on site and we are now in the process of doing so.”

Pegler Yorkshire Product Support Officer Steve Downes said, “We conduct a great many tests on all our products to ensure customers can be confident that our products will do what we say they will, but we have no problem with customers putting us to the test! Amino acids are a more unusual application, but XPress is a robust product and when used with 316 system tube comes with a 30-year guarantee. We could not offer such a comprehensive guarantee if we were not so confident in the product’s performance and capabilities, proven over years of successful installations and applications.”

Given the amount of XPress they are using, Waveney have now purchased two more press-fit tools and are employing the stainless range on a variety of applications, including on potable water samples, which XPress was expressly designed for – performance were water quality and hygiene are crucial factors.

Waveney is a mechanical and electrical engineering company working mainly for the water utility companies and is proud to have recently been named the title of ‘Supplier of the Year’ by Anglian Water – a considerable achievement bearing in mind the number of suppliers Anglian Water has to choose from.

With its many advantages over other similar products, XPress fittings were the obvious choice for Waveney. The fittings are compressed onto the tube using a press-fit tool, a heat free operation that uses no solders, fluxes or additional jointing materials. The simplicity of the technique means joints can be prepared, assembled and completed in half the time it would take to make a capillary or screwed steel joint, resulting in major time and cost savings – as Waveney have discovered.

XPress fittings are WRAS and DVGW approved and come in a range of sizes from 15mm to 108mm.
