Bird Brick Houses answer the most common architect questions [Blog]

Bird Brick Houses receive more enquiries from architects than any other professional population; with their deep experience of the type of sustainable development issues architects are frequently faced with.

Answers to the most common queries architects have about Bird Brick Houses are set out in the bullet points below:

  • Almost any bricks, metric and imperial can be accommodated, as can most bonds, including Stretcher (half bond), Flemish, English (quarter bond) and Soldier bond.

  • Boxes are manufactured from recycled polypropylene; brick slivers are (normally) cut from the same bricks used in the host wall and bonded to the front of the bird or bat box. The front of the box is retained by four stainless steel screws, however this can be made fixed (non-removable) if preferred.

  • A stainless steel mesh is fitted to the front instead of brick slivers in some cases, for example to ensure good adhesion to stonework or render.

  • In many cases Bird Brick Houses are able to adapt the basic designs to accommodate an architect’s bespoke building design requirements, for example non-standard bricks or a target bird or bat species not in our list.

  • The bird house / bat box is seamless when fitted in the host wall. All Bird Brick Houses boxes are supplied unpointed, so the mortar will match onsite.

  • The fitted bird or bat box is not deep enough to bridge the cavity and will not affect the insulation properties of the building.

  • Being fitted in the non-load bearing outside skin (typically of a cavity wall), no lintel is required, nor any modification to the building design. It is not advised for boxes to be fitted within 750mm of windows or lintels. If fitting clusters of boxes together (mainly swift boxes) it is advised lintels should be fitted.

  • Bird Brick Houses’ design is protected by UK patents and European rights of design.
