Main contractor: Carillion
Subcontractors: Roseville Plastering, Telling Finishings
Type of works: design and manufacture of Knauf Drywall’s Performer system of optimised education sector partition solutions.

Knauf Drywall’s Performer system of optimised education sector partition solutions, combined with streamlined specifications and inventory for most of the drywall requirements, are being used for multiple BSF projects in Nottingham by main contractor Carillion. Knauf Drywall’s ‘one specification fits all’ approach makes it simpler to control costs because after the first project there are no unknowns, and specifiers don’t have to start from scratch for each new school. And with the simplified inventory requirement, it is much easier to manage materials on site. Knauf Drywall products for the projects have been sourced through the local branch of CPD Distribution, the interiors division of the multi-national construction supplies specialist SIG plc.

Most partitions in the BSF projects have used 70mm Knauf‘C Studs and various permutations of Knauf Soundshield, Knauf Impact Panel, Knauf Standard Wallboard and Knauf Aquapanel Interior. In some high-performance specifications, Knauf Plank (19mm) and Knauf Sound Moistureshield (12.5mm) are also used. With all these components, and others including Knauf Earthwool Acoustic Partition Roll in various thicknesses, a comprehensive range of partition designs has been achieved, from 95 to 400mm wide with acoustic performances from 40dB(Rw) to 74dB(Rw) to meet the airborne sound requirements of Building Bulletin 93, creating learning spaces that are largely protected against intrusive sounds.

Knauf Drywall Project Specification Manager John Pullan produced a strategic specification document covering all the drywall work, simplifying project management for the architects and the two dry lining subcontractors, Wolverhampton-based Roseville Plastering and Telling Finishings of Mansfield.

John Pullan says: “With our optimised partition solutions for education we cover all the most common specifications. By adding the flexibility of our range, we give specifiers the scope to deliver creative design within the limits set by BB93 and other regulations.”

Telling Finishings Managing Director Adam Telling says: “We use Knauf Drywall products for more than 50% of our projects, because of their consistent quality, good technical support and wide range of boards. As a result, all the jobs we have done with Knauf Drywall have gone smoothly and were completed on time.”

Roseville Contracts Director Gary Bate says: “The strong working relationship we have with Knauf Drywall ensures that the right specification is constructed every time.” Roseville’s Specification and Technical Manager Paul Lodge adds: “Having worked with Knauf Drywall for over four years and the close working relationship we have with John Pullan has certainly speeded up the process of dealing with any technical issues that arose on site. All the knowledge, experience and understanding we have gained working together to deliver high quality projects, means that Knauf Drywall is always at the forefront of Roseville’s thinking when looking at new opportunities.”

Knauf Drywall manufactures a full range of plasters, plasterboards, insulating laminates, dry flooring, drywall accessories, and metal sections for domestic, commercial and public sector applications. Knauf Drywall pioneered carbon neutral plasterboard in the UK with Knauf Futurepanel. Knauf Drywall also actively promotes recycling from building sites and has a zero waste policy in its energy efficient factories at Sittingbourne in Kent and Immingham on Humberside.
