De Moyencourt Ballet has opened a purpose-built studio in Tamboerskloof, Cape Town, offering dancers a modern space to continue their training.
Founded in 1996 by Artistic Director, Susan De Moyencourt, the school has grown over nearly three decades to provide ballet classes for students of all ages.
The studio is fitted with a Harlequin Cascade performance vinyl floor, designed to provide a slip resistant smooth dance surface. This ensures dancers can train safely, build confidence and focus on their technique.
A Legacy of Ballet Excellence in Cape Town
De Moyencourt Ballet, originally known as the De Moyencourt School of Ballet, began when Susan was invited to teach at a private girls’ school nearly three decades ago. Since then, it has grown into a respected Cape Town ballet school, offering training for dancers from 3 years old to adults. Adult ballet classes, introduced in July, have become a popular addition, welcoming beginners as well as those returning to dance.
Susan, who trained with leading teachers at the Paris Opera, danced professionally across Europe before returning to South Africa. Locally, she has performed at Artscape, choreographed for Cape Town Opera and earned recognition as a dedicated teacher and choreographer.
A New Chapter for De Moyencourt Ballet
With a spacious dance studio, warm-up area, office, kitchen, two changing rooms and an outdoor courtyard, De Moyencourt Ballet provides a professional yet welcoming environment for dancers to grow.
After years of struggling with slippery floors, Susan wanted to give her students the best possible foundation for their training so opted for a Harlequin floor. She said: “It is important that the dancers feel confident to step out and move broadly without fear, particularly on pointe.”
Inspiring the Next Generation of Dancers
The mission of De Moyencourt Ballet is to provide a safe, inspiring space where dancers can express themselves through movement. While the school focuses on strong classical foundations, it also instills a passion for performing, discipline and a deep love for the art of ballet.
The school regularly participates in local competitions, Royal Academy of Dance examinations and large-scale productions. Looking ahead, Susan plans to offer more international opportunities, including tours to the Prague Dance Festival and Paris next year.
