De Wint Court in Lincolnshire Finds Ideal Shade Sail

De Wint Court in Lincolnshire Finds Ideal Shade Sail

What was the project brief?
De Wint Court – an extra care housing development in Lincoln – wanted a striking shade sail to liven up the area outside its entrance. They needed something with an interesting and aesthetically-pleasing design that also matched the modern look and colours of the brand new site and could cover the majority of the open space next to its lawn. A&S Landscape were thrilled when the team approached them to help them make this idea a reality.

What was the shade sail solution?
After looking over their shelter range, De Wint Court settled on the Maxima Sail™. A&S Landscape couldn’t have recommended a more fitting model, as its eye-catching design is sure to enhance any outdoor area and its versatility makes it perfect for a focal point in front of a contemporary building. This shade sail proved their canopies’ adaptability too, as they built it from two sails on a total of six uprights to make something that suited the client’s needs exactly. Also, they added a Karloo Sand shade cloth roof and Anthracite Grey steelwork which blended into the impressive architecture while still making a fantastic impression on visitors, staff and residents alike. The pair of 6000mm X 6000mm sails offered plenty of protection from the sun and nicely filled the open space by the building’s entrance.

What was the result of the new shelter?
De Wint Court thinks that the shade sail is a brilliant asset to its facilities. It has helped the different elements of the buildings and grounds to come together as a cohesive, visual unit and it is an effective signpost to the way in. What’s more, the fabric roof makes the shelter a practical sun shade that offers relief on hot summer days, and the combination of simple colours and an stylish design has created a welcoming area of interest at the site. The results of this project reminded A&S Landscape how beneficial their products can be for many communities with diverse needs.

About the client
De Wint Court is an extra care housing development comprised of 70 apartments, funded by The City of Lincoln Council, Homes England and Lincolnshire County Council. The city council says on its website that it wanted to ‘create new and updated residential accommodation to support residents to live more independently, yet together and more inclusively with the local surrounding community’. A&S Landscape found the team to be a pleasure to work with and they are happy that they and the site’s residents will enjoy their shade sail for many years.

De Wint Court is located in the historic city of Lincoln, famous for its picturesque cobbled streets and fantastic architecture. Lincoln Castle is a must-see attraction, complete with a Medieval Wall Walk, as well as the Gothic Lincoln Cathedral which dates from the 11th century. Visitors and local people alike can also enjoy the award-winning Collection Museum and the independent shops of Bailgate.

In what other ways can housing developments and care communities use canopies?
Sites like extra care housing developments can install shelters to improve facilities and day-to-day life for their residents and staff. Dining canopies can be useful to enable eating outdoors in all seasons, which can benefit physical and mental health. Covered walkway systems can bring unity to sites of multiple buildings and create dry access and clearer routes between them. They also offer protection to pathways so they last longer and keep those walking on them safe. Plus, cycle shelters can offer staff a secure place to store their bikes that maintains tidy outdoor spaces. Entrance canopies are a great option too because they can shield guests from the elements upon arrival, making their visits more pleasant in undesirable weather.
