What was the project brief?
Ysgol Morgan Llwyd in Wrexham, Wales wanted to find a duo of shade sails to create a sheltered seating area outdoors. They needed to come in contrasting sizes to accommodate the different spaces around the buildings and cover as many students as possible while eating or catching up with classmates in the fresh air. The staff also thought that the canopies should complement the school colours. They liked their designs the best when compared to other companies and they had the added benefit of being local to their site, so Ysgol Morgan Llwyd chose them to take on this project.

What was their canopy solution?
A&S Landscape talked through the various approaches and shelter types with the team, and this resulted in them picking their Maxima Sail™ for their two shade sails. Thanks to its high adaptability, this model is available in an unlimited number of configurations and shapes, so it was an excellent choice to work with the different spaces outside. They installed one with three 6000mm x 6000mm sails on eight uprights and one with a 6000mm x 6000mm sail on a total of four uprights, which covered the areas perfectly. Plus, they added Velvet Red roofs and Squirrel Grey steelwork – these looked sophisticated, reflected the institution’s branding, and created lots of room for seats or benches to be protected so students could relax there in all weathers.

What was the result of the new shade sails?
Everyone at Ysgol Morgan Llwyd was impressed with their two canopies; the way A&S Landscape were able to customise them to fit into their outdoor space has provided them with an amazing, covered seating area that will be popular with children wanting to sit, eat or socialise outdoors for years to come. The shade sail designs have also brought visual flair to the area, alongside practicality. It was a pleasure to manufacture shelters for this school that they truly loved, especially as they were a local client.

Ysgol Morgan Llwyd is a Welsh medium secondary school, which also has a Sixth Form where older students can continue their learning. It says on its website that staff take pride in the tradition of the children’s academic success, as well as their successes in extracurricular activities. The institution has values that its students should be both high-achieving learners and good citizens, and they appreciated working here as everyone was welcoming to them and dedicated to the project.

Ysgol Morgan Llwyd is based in Wrexham, North East Wales. This new city is well-known for its football team, which was acquired by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, as well as its critically acclaimed new-music conference, FOCUS Wales. It is a hub of creativity – such as in Tŷ Pawb, a community space that includes independent businesses, gallery exhibitions and a studio theatre.
