In medical environments, just as in work or home settings, ventilation plays a role in creating comfortable environments, and can even be effective in reducing cross-infection risk of airborne diseases. To achieve good levels of ventilation within buildings, there are two clear options – mechanical or natural.

With sustainability now high on the agenda for architects, incorporating greater levels of natural ventilation into designs is increasingly important. In addition to the benefits this can have in environments such as hospitals, ventilating rooms naturally reduces reliance on mechanical systems and therefore can support reduced energy consumption.

To incorporate more natural ventilation, windows are the obvious starting point. For example, when a room is warm, the natural instinct is to open a window, effectively cooling and ventilating the room. A high ventilation rate is also thought to be effective in reducing cross-infection risk from airborne diseases.

Already forming a significant part of the building envelope, windows can be utilised to make the building fabric work even harder – for the benefit of occupants and sustainability. To introduce greater volumes of glazing for additional comfort and enhanced natural ventilation, Reynaers Aluminium has developed MasterLine SoftTone.

Equipping buildings with natural ventilation, SoftTone utilises a carefully designed interface between the frame and sash to enable natural ventilation while limiting noise. As a parallel opening window, MasterLine SoftTone also delivers a larger open area per m2 than traditional opening types. In practice, that enables windows to be opened for effective ventilation, while noise ingress is managed for greater occupant comfort.
