For over 45 years, Harlequin has been widely recognised for its technical expertise in the manufacture and supply of flooring dedicated to dance, performing arts and events. Sustainability is embedded throughout the business, guided by an eco-responsibility policy that influences every stage of product development, manufacture and use.
Harlequin’s environmental strategy is aligned with six of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, reflecting a global approach that integrates compliance, sustainable innovation and transparency.
Responsible Sourcing and REACH Compliance
All Harlequin raw materials are sourced according to environmental, social and ethical criteria. Materials comply with REACH regulations and do not contain substances of very high concern (SVHCs) in concentrations greater than 0.1% (w/w).
Recyclable Flooring
All Harlequin vinyl flooring is 100% recyclable. Harlequin also continues to develop innovative products that can be loose-laid, without glue, in order to reduce VOC emissions associated with adhesives. This allows flooring to be easily lifted at the end of its service life for reuse or recycling.
Waste Reduction and Sustainable Manufacturing
Harlequin takes a proactive approach to waste reduction, with all Harlequin vinyl floors containing between 23% and 30% post-manufacture recycled content. This recycled material is also used to create a range of second-life products, extending the value of materials beyond their first use.
By offering a range of roll lengths across each floor type, Harlequin helps minimise cutting waste during installation. Any offcuts are then recycled as part of a circular production approach, helping to keep materials in use for longer.
BREEAM and LEED Certification Standards
All Harlequin floors support BREEAM and LEED certification credits, with timber sourced exclusively from well-managed FSC or PEFC certified forests. Formaldehyde emissions remain well below European and U.S. standards.
Harlequin sprung floors also exceed leading European and international requirements for VOC and formaldehyde emissions, supporting good indoor air quality.
Clean Air Gold Certified
Harlequin has Clean Air Gold certification, the highest tier within Intertek’s Clean Air programme.
Harlequin floors are independently tested to meet international VOC emission limits and comply with leading indoor air quality standards, making them suitable for use in high-performance, health-focused indoor environments.
Trusted by architects and specifiers, this certification underlines Harlequin’s role in creating healthier, high-performance spaces across schools, studios and theatres.
Reducing Carbon Footprint and Progress Towards Net Zero
By incorporating recycled vinyl into its products, Harlequin has reduced average embedded carbon by 7.22%. Recyclable packaging and transport optimisation further help to lower CO₂ emissions, reducing the company’s overall carbon footprint.
These actions contribute to a significant reduction in environmental impact, alongside lower VOC and formaldehyde emissions.
Harlequin also calculates its carbon footprint to improve data accuracy and establish a clear internal benchmark for continuous improvement, helping to reach Net Zero emissions. This is supported by optimising fleet emissions through the transition to electric and hybrid vehicles, alongside ongoing investment in tree-planting initiatives.
One of Harlequin’s recent reforestation initiatives included contributing to a tree-planting week in Riga, where a total of 5,000 saplings were planted. Investing in the future and restoring natural ecosystems remains an important part of Harlequin’s ongoing sustainability commitment.
A Long-Term Commitment to Sustainable Performance Flooring
Through a combination of technical expertise, research and responsible sourcing, Harlequin continues to drive meaningful progress in sustainability while delivering trusted performance flooring worldwide.
