Keep pace with the cycling boom and upgrade parking infrastructure

With more commuters switching to two wheels, it’s time to improve cycle parking infrastructure and boost the benefits of sustainable travel in communities across the UK.

As riders navigate the cost of public transport, record high fuel prices and disruption to services due to strike action, cycling levels are continuing to grow.

But the industry has voiced concerns that while more people are getting on their bikes, sales of new bicycles are behind pre-pandemic levels.

It is calling for greater investment in cycle parking facilities, as well as better cycling routes and networks, to help more people feel confident about riding their bikes for leisure as well as everyday trips.

High-quality secure cycle parking
Last year (2021) The Bicycle Association and the Cycle Rail Working Group published a new quality and security standard for public cycle parking in the UK.

The standard advises those investing in and managing public cycle parking on the key issues to take into account when selecting products for their locations.

Considerations include always choosing cycle parking products which are safe and easy to use; investing in systems which are secure and long lasting; and always buying from a manufacturer, such as Broxap Street Furniture, which complies with UK legal requirements.

The standard was initiated by evidence that many people give up on cycling altogether if their bike is stolen, while a lack of available secure cycle parking can put riders off particular journeys.

The quality of existing cycle parking was also called into review with good design issues addressed in the standard to ensure cycle parking products remain effective for users.

Inclusive and sustainable cycle parking
The Standards for Public Cycle Parking includes a focus on cycle parking requirements at railway stations although it may be updated in future to include site specific guidance for other locations.

Meanwhile the Code for Sustainable Homes, which assesses and certifies the sustainability of new home design and construction, and BREEAM, a certification system for sustainable buildings, also include cycle parking provision in their criteria.

The adequacy of cycle parking facilities, location, type, size and access to the facilities are all reviewed under the two schemes.

At Broxap, they have decades of experience in the design, manufacture and installation of cycle parking infrastructure.

Their trusted designs include the easily recognisable Sheffield stands, inclusive cycle parking stands for non-standard bikes, and scooter racks to accommodate the growth in pupils scooting to school.

Workplace Cycle Parking
For workplaces, their cycle parking range includes a varied range of Cycle Shelters to keep bikes clean and dry during working hours ready for the ride home.

Their Cycle Hubs and Compounds are ideal for locations such as business parks or large employment bases such as hospitals where large capacity cycle parking is required for extended periods of time.

With a wide range of styles, materials and designs available, their teams can advise on the best solution for the needs of users, including custom options such as CCTV, lighting and fob entry systems for increased security.

Their Space Saving Cycle Parking options are also ideal for maximising cycle parking provision and accommodating future demand.

On Street Cycle Parking
Cycle Racks and Cycle Stands from Broxap offer cost effective on-street cycle parking which can easily be extended to accommodate growing numbers of cyclists.

These products provide multiple locking points for security and are easy to use.

Encouraging cycling through town and city centres helps to reduce congestion and lower emissions for healthier locations to benefit everyone.

Cycle parking for transport hubs
Offering convenient cycle parking at transport hubs such as bus and railway stations is essential to incentivise those who live close by to take advantage of sustainable travel options.

Commuters need to be confident they can safely store their bikes while continuing their onward journey.

At Broxap they have partnered with a number of travel operators including Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and West Midlands Combined Authority to design, manufacture and install compounds at key locations along the rail network.

These projects have resulted in a range of modern, large capacity hubs in their product range with a focus on security and accessibility.

Cycle parking for schools
As sponsors of the annual Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel, they support schools with the infrastructure they need to encourage more families to cycle or scoot to classes.

Their Bike Shelters for Primary Schools includes junior version of their most popular and versatile cycle shelters including the Wardale Junior Cycle Shelter and Sofco Junior Cycle Shelter.

Their Cycle Racks are also designed with young cyclists in mind, available in a range of bright, attractive colours and built to suit the dimensions of children’s bikes.

Their Scooter Rack is growing in popularity alongside Broxap’s Hybrid Scooter/Cycle Rack as the active lifestyle message continues to be shared with pupils.

With a range of Cycle Parking Accessories also available, Broxap Street Furniture offers everything needed for sites across the UK to keep pace with the recent boom in cycling levels.

Their experienced team of advisers are available to discuss current and future requirements and the best products and systems to meet the needs of users.
