Scotland is not only known for its kilts and smoked salmon, but also for its majestic mountains and (residential) buildings that you can admire from miles away.
One of these projects of new buildings is ‘Candleriggs Quarter’ in Glasgow, a redevelopment in 2 phases of the Drum Property Group.
The first phase started in 2020, with MACE ltd as Project Manager. In this merely commercial part of the development, new hotels, leisure accommodation, event space, business offices, retail units and restaurants are to be installed.
The second phase started in 2022, with Graham Construction as Contractor, contains 346 BTR flats (both one and two-bedroom apartments) and retail or commercial units on the ground floor. Only in this phase Kerkstoel was involved as supplier of precast concrete twin walls (double walls).
For the BRT scheme, Graham Construction awarded Hampsey Construction Ltd to build the 5 Core with a concrete frame.
The Sub Contractor has chosen for precast concrete elements for all vertical elements (columns and double walls) and insitu (ready-mix concrete) for the slabs.
Because of the time pressure and height of the elements, the precast columns were at first even cast on site, before they were cast in a factory.
Kerkstoel supplied round 17,000 m² of Double Walls (or called Twin Walls) for all bearing walls of the lift shafts and stair cores.
The advantage of using this mixed concrete system is that you have a faster turnaround per level. Within 18 days you have one finished level with columns, walls and slabs, because there’s no formwork required for the verticals. You can even foresee the recesses for the precast stairs and the mounting sleeves for the working platform in the lift shaft. This makes an important time saving in the construction of these kind of buildings.
By using Twin Walls and Wide slabs, you create one monolithic construction, thanks to the infill concrete into the walls that is combined with the pour of the concrete of the slabs.
