Mechanical Smoke Ventilation Controls
D+H UK
MSVS is designed to speedily remove smoke from common areas such as staircases and lobbies. This smoke ventilation method is detailed in Approved Document B, BS 9991:2015 and BS 9999:2017. These systems control fire rated fans, dampers, grills and NSHEVs to push smoke up and out of the building. D+H UK supply, install, commission and service fully compliant mechanical ventilation systems.
High-rise application in case of fire:
+ The fire damper will open into the smoke shaft, other dampers are then “locked out” to ensure they stay closed. (www.dh-partner.com/uk/en_GB/nshevs/smoke-damper)
+ The duty fan will operate to draw smoke through the damper and up the shaft (if this fan fails, an automatic switch will operate the standby fan).
+ Pressure causes the stairway fire door to open.
+ Inlet air is provided by opening a head of stairs Natural Heat Smoke Exhaust Ventilator (NSHEV). (www.dh-partner.com/uk/en_GB/nshevs/nshev-roof-louvre)
+ Fresh air is drawn through the staircase and door into the protected lobby.
This keeps the staircase free of smoke to allow safe escape for residents and access for firefighters. The basic principle is similar for different building configurations, control of the system is adaptable to meet the architects design.
