Novum Structures delivered a specialist ETFE roofing solution for North Shields Transport Hub, the first net zero carbon building in North Tyneside. Novum was responsible for the engineering, fabrication, supply and installation of an ETFE Air Filled Pillow roof and canopy over the transport hub.

The installation features Novum's two-layer ETFE Air Filled Pillow system, comprising 41 individual pillows covering an area of 368 sq m over the Northern Concourse. The system's extruded aluminium profiles are secured to glulam beams using steel upstands, combining practical performance with the architectural design of the transport hub.

Due to the site's coastal location and persistent issues with seagulls, a bird net was also installed over the ETFE pillows to help maintain the long-term functionality and cleanliness of the roof. The triangular shape of the pillows presented additional design and installation challenges, requiring careful engineering throughout the project.

The completed ETFE roof contributes to the distinctive appearance of the new transport hub while supporting the project's wider focus on sustainability and environmental performance.
