Preprufe® waterproofing used for London Crossrail

Preprufe® waterproofing used for London Crossrail

Preprufe® Waterproofing by GCP Applied Technologies was chosen to waterproof three stations for the London Crossrail project.

Crossrail is one of the UK’s largest construction projects, expected to transform the rail network in London and the South East.

Since 2009, 42 kilometres of new tunnels have been constructed reaching depths of 30 metres and 40 developed stations to provide services to Crossrail passengers.

Preprufe® was used for the new £1 billion Tottenham Court Road station, the £300 million Liverpool Street station and the £500 million Canary Wharf Crossrail station. GCP Applied Technologies working alongside Balfour Beatty, Alpine BeMo Tunnelling, Morgan Sindall and Vinci Construction as well as engineers Mott Macdonald/Arup and contractor for Canary Wharf, Laing O’Rourke.

Tottenham Court Road is the length of four football pitched and is as deep as three stories underground, Liverpool Street needed new ticket halls and a 40 metre deep ventilation shaft to house the electrics and mechanics to service the station. Both stations required reliable waterproofing suitable for confined spaces.

2000 square metres of GCP’s Preprufe® waterproofing membrane was used at Tottenham Court Road and over 5000 sqaure metres was used at Liverpool Street station.

During the construction of the new Canary Wharf station 100 million litres of dock water needed extracting. After draining the site and constructing a cofferdam the site required high-level waterproofing.

6000 square metres of Preprufe® was used to ensure the sit remained watertight, holding back up to 10metres of Thames dock water.

Preprufe® membrane offered the ideal soliton to ensure long term waterproofing performance at the sites and due to its quick and easy application.

Preprufe’s® Advanced Bond Technology™ enables concrete to aggressively adhere to the membrane forming a unique seal that prevents water migration.

Due to its acrylic surface coating, Preprufe® membrane simplifies installation by removing the need for multiple layers and complicated detailing and well as minimising the number of materials needed to be sourced.

GCP offered waterproofing solutions throughout the project including Silcor® liquid waterproofing membranes, Adprufe® integrally waterproof concrete system and Adcor® hydrophilic and PVC waterstops.

GCP have also provided waterproofing solutions for other critical transport stations such as Bond Street, Farringdon, Whitechapel, Pudding Mill Lane and Custom House.
