The design, by architects Jenkins & Marr, is distinguished by large overhanging cantilevered canopies which appear to ‘float’ over visitors at both entrances. The strong visual landmark is a reference to the scale and visual presence of the huge ships which once dominated the townscape as they were being built. Reynaers systems are installed throughout the main college building, to facilitate expansive views of the riverside and the surrounding town, a key element of the building’s design.
Fabricators for the project, Solaglas Contracting Scotland, installed Reynaers CW50 curtain walling to the main entrance and stairs utilising CW50-HL for its striking aesthetic horizontal lines and CW50-SC, structural clamped, throughout the building, including ribbon windows to the classrooms. Due to the college’s location under Glasgow Airport’s flight path, 10mm double glazed units were specified because of their acoustic properties and Trox vents, all accommodated by the CW50 system, which ensures that classrooms are immune from external sound and are well ventilated.

“One of the main reasons for specifying Reynaers was that we knew they could provide the high quality we needed within the budget available,” explained David Bennie, Project Manager for Solaglas Contracting Scotland.

“But equally important, the CW 50 system gives us great flexibility. The range of combinations it offers means we knew we could use it throughout the building on curtain walling and windows, enabling us to let in maximum light without any restrictions.”

Now fully open, the striking three-storey Clydebank College campus caters for over 10,000 students and incorporates modern engineering and construction workshops, state of the art science labs, advanced sporting facilities, a conference suite and open public spaces.
