Job: New Central Substation
Value: Orsogril® louvred panels £13,000.
Architect: Seeboard in-house design team.
Main contractor: Allenbuild Ltd, South East Region.

Project to build a new substation to house electrical transformers in a central location in Croydon.

The building had to be functional as well as comply with strict planning regulations.
Clients specifications for Orsogril®:

  • A steel grid to provide walls which would be aesthetically acceptable to the planners
  • Protection for the public from accessing the electrical equipment
  • Security that would be intruder/vandal proof
  • Ventilation to the transformers
  • Screening to prevent birds (specifically pigeons) from entering the building

Solution: Orsogril® Talia Louvred Panels

The rigid grating panels are constructed from mild steel flat bars and round bars electrofused together. The Talia flat bar is a three-times flanged 50 x 1.5mm flat bar formed as a louvre which can be set in either the vertical or horizontal plane. There is a small 9mm gap between the louvres which gives some through visibility. (Talia Screen was a possible alternative where the louvres overlap each other by 4.5mm making the grating opaque). The panels were supplied with the louvres on the vertical plain 2,500mm height and 1,900mm wide.

Orsogril® worked with the structural steelwork sub contractor to produce the most economical and practical solution for supplying the Talia panels and attaching them to the RHS structural columns. After the design was approved by the client, the structural steelwork was fabricated and erected and the building largely completed. The electrical transformers were installed and finally the Orsogril® Talia panels were delivered and fitted by the main contractor.

Three doors with door slam posts were incorporated within the structure. The door frames were fabricated from RHS sections between which were welded panels of the Talia material.

In addition an Orsogril® grating fence and gate secured an extension to the main building.

The Orsogril® panels were galvanised to BS EN ISO 1461:1999 and then polyester powder coated to BS 6497, colour RAL 8017.
