Strengthening Load-Bearing Beams for a Reinforced Concrete Railway Viaduct

Renovation of Sokółka-Suwałki Railway Line's Viaducts to Accommodate Increased Traffic

In anticipation of an uptick in freight train traffic following the takeover of passenger traffic by Via Baltica, the Sokółka-Suwałki railway line's viaducts needed to be renovated to handle the additional utility loads. One of the viaducts in need of an upgrade was located near Krasnybór village.

This project involved reinforcing two reinforced concrete beams with a span of 13.00 m using Ruregold's FRCM system, specifically PBO-MESH 70/18, which was glued onto polymer-modified mineral mortar PBO-MX Concrete. The design called for three mesh layers to be glued along the entire length of the beams, plus two layers in the support zone.

Despite challenging weather conditions and difficult terrain, the team of four completed the reinforcement work within two days, thanks to the lightweight nature of the reinforcement elements and the FRCM system's other beneficial properties. The works were carried out on an active railway route, with a temporary speed limit of 30 km/h. The target speed of the line is 110 km/h.
