Structural reinforcement of a historic industrial chimney

Structural reinforcement of a historic industrial chimney

Errebi Paper is a paper manufacturer that has been in operation for over 40 years, producing disposable items made from tissue paper and dry paper for the medical, beauty, healthcare and food sectors.

The tower of its historic production plant in Madonna dell’Olmo, inthe province of Cuneo, is one of the oldest in the area: standing 72 metres tall, it has dominated the local skyline for decades.

The chimney tower has recently undergone refurbishment: although no longer in operation, it is a work of post-industrial architecture of historical interest which, due to wear and tear and
exposure to the elements, had deteriorated in places.

A number of Laterlite products were used for the refurbishment and structural reinforcement works, specifically those from the RureGold brand.

In particular, MX-15 Plaster, the RureGold brand’s M15 fibre reinforced mortar, was chosen for the structural reinforcement of the existing masonry. This ready-mixed mortar is ideal for
reinforced plastering and CRM systems (Composite Reinforced Mortar), for deep joint filling using the stitching repair of masonry technique.

An old lining, built in the 1960s, was then restored. Localised grouting was carried out using MX-Inject NHL, a pozzolanic grout based on natural hydraulic lime (NHL) for the consolidation of
masonry. The specific chemical composition and mechanical properties of MX-Inject NHL make it particularly suitable for preparing injection grouts that are compatible with existing building
materials.

To reinforce the load-bearing structure of the chimney, wraps were applied using C-Mesh 84/84, the FRCM system for masonry comprising a bidirectional carbon mesh weighing 84+84 g/m² and an matrix (MX-C25 Masonry).

Within the same Errebi Paper industrial complex, another warehouse of historical interest has been refurbished using the C-Mesh 84/84 and C-Mesh 182 reinforcement systems, the specific system for reinforcing reinforced concrete elements, comprising a unidirectional carbon fibre mesh weighing 182 g/m² and the specific inorganic matrix MX-C50 Concrete.

First, the parts that were structurally unsound were demolished, after which restoration work began. RureGold solutions proved suitable for installation, which was carried out using a 72-metre-high scaffold equipped with a lift to move personnel and equipment.
