Tudor Roof Tiles shortlisted in the 2020 Pitched Roofing Awards

Tudor Roof Tiles Co Ltd has been shortlisted with NRA Roofing and Flooring Services Ltd for the “Best use of a roof tile for a heritage roof” category of the 2020 Pitched Roofing Awards for the replacement of the historic roofs of Stratford Girls’ Grammar School in Shottery, Stratford upon Avon.

Organised by RCI magazine, these prestigious industry awards showcase excellence in the roofing sector, highlighting successful partnerships between manufacturers and contractors and recognising commitment to quality.

The top-ranking girls’ school incorporates ‘Shottery Manor’, a Grade II Listed building of national cultural importance dating from the 15th century which, according to tradition, is where the playwright William Shakespeare was betrothed to Ann Hathaway in 1582.

Now the school’s sixth form centre, the former manor house has been re-roofed as part of an ongoing maintenance project undertaken by NRA Roofing and Flooring Services Ltd.

Tudor Roof Tiles supplied over 52,000 handmade clay plain roof tiles for the old two storey half-H plan building and its single storey south wing. These were laid in a stunning blend of seven natural mellow clay tones, to mirror the random weathering of the original roofs and to complement the semi-rural character of the surrounding conservation area.

The complex mix of blended colours consisted of: 20% Medium Antique, 20% Sussex Brown, 20% Jubilee, 10% Red Antique, 10% Dark Antique, 10% Weathered Earth, 10% Sussex Red, which were expertly mixed on the roof and laid diagonally in order to ensure an even distribution throughout without patterning.

Traditional finishing methods were also used, including wet verges and ridges, and stepped lead flashings to the abutments.

We are delighted to have been involved in this project of great historical and cultural importance, where our blend of traditional handmade plain tiles will help preserve and enhance the natural roofscape of Shottery Manor for many years to come,” said Paul Lythgoe, Managing Director of Tudor Roof Tile Co Ltd.

With no two tiles alike, Tudor’s plain clay tiles have a random variation of colour and camber and a weathered instant aged look that complements listed and historic properties. Each clay tile is carefully hand-pressed, moulded and trimmed and then strengthened using advanced firing techniques, in order to give exceptional durability to modern performance standards.

Made from highly durable Etruria Marl clay, Tudor roof tiles are CE marked to EN 1304:2013 standards for frost resistance, water impermeability and flexural strength.

In recent years, the company has received several accolades for the aesthetic qualities of its products, including winner of the best ‘Commercial Property Application using Roof Tiles’ in the 2018 Pitched Roofing Awards.
