Client: UAE Pavilion, Shanghai Expo 2010
Architect: Foster + Partners
Type of works: The engineering, furnish and installation of the UAE Pavilion
Novum was contracted to engineer, furnish and install the UAE Pavilion, a sand dune inspired structure at the Shanghai Expo 2010. To create the complex free form structures, Novum proposed a bolted system that uses rectangular hollow steel sections joined by nodes, eliminating the need for expensive field welding.
The demanding fast-track construction schedule allowed only four months from project start to completion. The UAE Pavilion was designed to be disassembled
and shipped to the UAE to be erected again after the Shanghai Expo.
Structurally the FF system was used. Forged steel nodes are electroplated and painted. Double node technology solves free form geometric issues of beam twist. Rectangular steel tubes are hot-dip galvanized and painted.
