Whitby Hospital is a Community Hospital providing inpatient, outpatient and community services. Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust provides community and out of hours services to Whitby and surrounding areas, and currently has a population of approximately 14,000 residents.
A selection of Gradus Wall Protection systems alongside Gerflor flooring was specified for this critical ProCure 22 project. Corners are one of the most vulnerable internal areas of a building, as they are susceptible to damage caused by pedestrian and wheeled traffic. Gradus PVC-u Corner Guards provided a solution for protecting these vulnerable corners, whilst reducing long-term maintenance costs, and help to maintain the long-term appearance of the building interior.
Whitby Hospital also benefited from installing SureProtect Endure wall cladding at half height in the corridor and circulation areas, this solution provided a cost-effective way to reduce operational cleaning costs and protects the walls from day-to-day damage. As part of this complete package, Gradus also supplied and installed a Combination Rail, which combines both a handrail and a wall guard into a single profile. As well as offering wall protection against impacts from wheeled traffic, the Combination Rail provides essential support and wayfinding for pedestrians.
For a safer environment for all patients, staff and visitors from slips, trips and falls, Gradus installed Stairtile on the external steps, this ensured a sufficient degree of visual contrast to protect the user.
Over 7,000m2 of Gerflor flooring was installed at Whitby Hospital. This included their world class Taralay, Tarasafe and Taraflex ranges, that come with revolutionary surface treatments for unrivalled performance. They are extremely hardwearing, hygienic and are easy to clean and maintain and are available in contemporary colourways and designs.
"As well as being on the P22 supply chain, Gradus and Gerflor had a wide selection of products to suit the different performance needs in the varying spaces of the hospital, and the colours and patterns available allowed us to create a more domestic feel, especially in the inpatient ward. We are all delighted with the final finish and are pleased to say that the healthcare facility is future proofed for years to come" - Louise Drew, Senior Architect, Medical Architecture
