The strengthening and rehabilitation of existing structures represent one of the key challenges in the field of civil engineering. In this context, FRCM (Fabric-Reinforced Cementitious Matrix) systems are increasingly used to improve the performance of structural elements made of concrete or masonry.
By combining cementitious matrices with fiber-reinforced fabrics, FRCM systems provide an effective strengthening solution characterized by low thickness, compatibility with existing substrates, and a simple application that is particularly suited to the rehabilitation of existing structures.
What Are FRCM Systems?
FRCM systems consist of a combination of a fabric or mesh—such as carbon or PBO fibers—and an inorganic matrix. The combination of these materials allows stresses to be effectively transferred between the existing substrate and the strengthening system, helping to improve the load-bearing capacity and structural performance of the strengthened element.
One of the key advantages of this technology is the possibility of carrying out strengthening interventions with very limited thickness, minimizing the impact on the existing structure while preserving, where required, its original geometry and architectural characteristics.
Main Applications
FRCM systems can be used for a wide range of strengthening applications and on different types of structural elements.
Common applications include the flexural and shear strengthening of concrete elements, the strengthening of masonry walls and vaults, and interventions aimed at improving the load-bearing capacity of existing structural elements.
The selection of the appropriate system and strengthening configuration must, of course, take into account the characteristics of the substrate, the loads acting on the structure, and the specific objectives of the intervention.
From Theory to Practice
Understanding the characteristics and advantages of a strengthening technology is important but understanding how the system is actually applied on site is equally essential.
For this reason, we have created a theoretical and practical webinar dedicated to FRCM strengthening systems, combining technical insights with a hands-on demonstration.
The first part of the webinar focuses on the characteristics of FRCM systems, their main applications, and their use on different structural elements.
The second part moves from theory to practice with a step-by-step demonstration of the system application, illustrating the main installation stages and providing a practical insight into the application process.
