Why trade professionals need to embrace sustainability and how Dulux Trade can help

Sustainability has become one of the hottest topics and will no doubt be at the top of everyone’s agenda for the foreseeable future.

According to the Climate Change Committee, the built environment contributes to around 40% of UK greenhouse gas emissions*, with 14% of this coming from the energy used in UK homes*. Trade professionals play a vital role in reducing these numbers and creating healthier, more sustainable spaces.

New rules and regulations
From 2025, architects and specifiers will have a new set of rules to think about. The government is introducing the Future Homes and Building Standard. These regulations will ensure that newly built homes produce 75-80% less carbon emissions. There will be an improvement to the standards of renovations and extensions too. New office spaces and retail environments will also have to cut emissions by 27%.

Water-based for the win
With that in mind, professionals need to consider how paints and coatings can affect indoor air quality, and the impact on the wellbeing of building users.

Water-based products are significantly better for the environment compared to traditional solvent-based products because they have low Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) levels. VOCs release carbon-based gases into the atmosphere, which contributes to air pollution. They can also have a negative impact on the health of both appliers and occupants. Water-based paints and coatings are not only a kinder choice, but a smarter way to meet sustainability targets.

Sustainable solutions from Dulux Trade
Dulux Trade offer a wide range of water-based products which are non-yellowing, have low odour and offer quicker drying times, all with an excellent quality finish. Here are some of the innovative and sustainable solutions:

1. Dulux Trade Airsure Range
Dulux Trade Airsure paints are 99.9% VOC free to minimise the impact on indoor air quality. Based on in can VOC contact, measured in accordance with ISO 11890-2:2013. Both Dulux Trade Airsure Diamond Matt and Dulux Trade Airsure Vinyl Matt are BREEAM and LEED compliant and classified as low emissions. The Diamond Matt product contains scrub, scuff, and stain resistant technology. It’s repeatedly cleanable and perfect for high traffic areas.

2. Dulux Trade Evolve Matt
Dulux Trade Evolve Matt delivers excellent coverage, smooth application and a professional quality matt finish. Made with 35% recycled paint content, Dulux Trade Evolve Matt uses reclaimed paint destined for landfill or incineration that has been through a strict recycling process and re-engineered into a new product that offers a lower carbon footprint than the standard Vinyl Matt.

3. Dulux Trade Sterishield Dual Active
Dulux Trade Sterishield Dual Active is a quick drying, water-based coating containing an in-film bactericide. It inhibits bacteria growth and reduces populations of MRSA and E. coli. Promoting good hygiene, consider this innovation for healthcare environments.

Championing sustainable building practices
Dulux Decorator Centre recently surpassed a staggering milestone with its free Can Recycling scheme, further helping architects and specifiers to consider how building materials can aid greener practices. Read more about the initiative here.
