Construction
IBAA was supplied mainly from Blue Phoenix’s Castle Bromwich Plant at Birmingham. Type 1 and Class 1A was used on the spine roads, footpaths, haul roads and reinstatement of all services inside footpaths. The Type 1 material was used in the compound areas to construct a flat and stable surface for car parking and office units including materials containers and welfare facilities. This material was also used to construct the haul roads allowing access to all plant and vehicles.
The roads were dug at 660mm for the road box formation (cut and fill procedure). Material was then installed for the capping layer inside the road box, building up for underside of kerb line and road construction to underside of base at a depth of 400mm to all main spine roads. Class 1A was used for trench reinstatement for services, building up flush to existing ground level with services dug to depths of 1250mm at the deepest for water and shelving with dual trenches coming up to 450mm for LV and BT services.
Footpaths also constructed after edgings were laid using Type 1 at a depth of between 160-270mm for underside of edging laying concrete bed onto stone and trimming paths to 70mm for underside of base course. Also used for drainage reinstatement where 1050mm concrete pipes have been installed, including a pumping station platform for a compacted surface for Grasscrete blocks.
Benefit
IBAA is an extremely cost-effective material when compared to Primary Aggregates and BP UK is working towards a verified Carbon Footprint.
There are also advantages logistically when using IBAA due to the low density of the material allowing for fewer vehicle movements as this gives volumetric advantages over primary materials.
