The Grange University Hospital, located in the region of Gwent & South Powys, is a £350m healthcare project managed by Laing O’Rourke and designed to provide a range of critical care services and complex specialist treatments.
Bristol-based CDE Services, who were awarded all packages for drainage works, have worked with Saint-Gobain PAM UK to install a cast iron drainage solution that complements the use of offsite-manufactured bathroom pods.
The project was initiated in the summer of 2017, with a capacity of 560 beds spread over the 55,000m2 facility. Cosgrove & Drew Engineering Services Ltd were chosen to install all of the drainage by contractor Crown House. This led to the collaboration between CDE Services and Saint-Gobain PAM UK, who were the preferred supplier chosen to deliver the pipework.
Zac Cosgrove, Managing Director for Cosgrove & Drew Engineer Services Ltd (CDE Services), said; “We were contracted to install all above-ground drainage systems across the D&T Building as well as the various wards. The entire building was specified with cast iron systems and comprised of over 9,768 metres of pipework across the site, which meant that working closely with Saint-Gobain PAM was essential to ensure that the project was completed on schedule.
“We’ve actually been working with Crown House & Saint-Gobain PAM from the early stages of the project, and the collaboration between our businesses has been instrumental in the success of the installation. When we were beginning the project, representatives from Saint-Gobain PAM joined our team on site to provide refresher courses on best-practice installation methods and product codes and they even provided advice on the best cutting equipment to use, helping us to deliver high levels of productivity due to our in-depth understanding of the product and its applications.
“Our close working relationship also provided further benefits; the Saint-Gobain PAM team were extremely helpful throughout the whole installation process, often visiting the site to ‘snag-check’ our work. This allowed us to spot any potential problems early, enabling us to rectify them without losing much time, and also provided both Crown House and Laing O’Rourke with the peace-of-mind that all the drainage installations were completed to a high standard. The benefits of having a third-party quality checking the installations, especially when that third party is the product manufacturer, cannot be overstated.”
Matt Lightbody, Soil & Drain Sales Director for Saint-Gobain PAM UK, commented; “By sending our team out to site to regularly check on the installation progress, we were able to support the CDE Services team to reduce the likelihood of installation issues. With this, and the refresher training we provided before the project began, CDE Services were able to provide an excellent standard of installation that kept the project on track.
“We know that both Laing O’Rourke and Crown House have been really pleased with the progress that the team at CDE Services have made, and it’s been really exciting to work with such a professional team. They’ve put in a huge amount of work across the past year, and our collaboration has been a fantastic success.”
Zac continues; “In just under one year, we completed over 33,000 man hours of installation time and the installation processes chosen were a big part of this great achievement. The Ensign system features quickly-installed couplings and fittings which have been key to the project’s success; I don’t believe that any other material could have allowed us to keep up with the pace of the programme. In addition, especially on such a big site, the innate robustness of cast iron was vital. There are a number of potential hazards that could damage pipe work on site, so by using cast iron, we were able to avoid any delays that could have been caused by damaged products.
“The support that we’ve had from Saint-Gobain PAM throughout the project has been invaluable; our collaboration has helped us to deliver a tough project on time and under budget and has even helped us win another project with Oxford University, which we will be working with Saint-Gobain PAM on again. Knowing that we have the support of the both the engineers and the sales team whenever we need it is vital to us, as it provides the confidence for our team and the contractors that our work is completed to the highest standard.”
Matt concluded; “After working with CDE on the SCCC Grange University Hospital project, we’re thrilled to have built a strong and productive working relationship with them. The complex project was a great example of why working closely with customers is so important, and we’re looking forward to strengthening our relationship with CDE in the future.”
