Glass Futures, Glassmaking Pilot Plant Facility, St Helens

Material Specification
SHW Series 600 6F4 Capping Layer and SWH Clause 803 Type 1 Sub-base.

Overview
This project involves the construction of a brand new sustainable glass making Pilot Plant facility in St Helens.

Client
Bowmer & Kirkland LTD.

Delivery Partner
QED Construction LTD.

Construction
The construction consists of circa 5,000 tonnes of Incinerator Bottom Ash Aggregate (IBAA) 6F4 capping layer across the site, to include roads, car parks and the building footprint. The 6F4 capping was laid to a depth of between 150mm and 300mm and covered with IBAA SHW Clause 803 Type 1 sub-base.

Benefit
IBAA is an extremely cost-effective material when compared to Primary Aggregates and BPUK is working towards a verified Carbon Footprint. There are also advantages logistically when using IBAA due to the low density of the material allowing for fewer vehicle movements as this gives volumetric advantages over primary materials.

Blue Phoenix now have a CPD, explaining the benefits of IBAA in greater detail, which can be found here.
