Optimised Air Handling for a Prestigious Scottish University Sports Complex

Optimised Air Handling for a Prestigious Scottish University Sports Complex

High-efficiency air handling delivers superior ventilation, energy savings, and long-term performance.

The University of Edinburgh required an upgrade to its sports complex ventilation system. The existing McQuay air handling unit (AHU), manufactured in 1996, was outdated and at the end of its serviceable life. The University engaged Daikin Applied (UK) to conduct a site survey and assess the feasibility of refurbishment. Following the evaluation, it was determined that replacing the AHU with a new, high-efficiency system would provide the best long-term solution.

Daikin Applied Solution

Working closely with the University and the M&E contractor OCS, Daikin Applied (UK) proposed a new AHU incorporating an internal side corridor for
improved accessibility and maintenance. The AHU was designed to achieve a 7.7 m3/s supply and extract airflow while adhering to the site’s spatial constraints. The unit featured a high-efficiency counterflow plate heat exchanger and an EC fan array to enhance efficiency.
Constructed to T2/TB2 standards under BS EN 1886, the unit ensured durability and high performance. Initially planned for shipment in one or two sections, weight restrictions for the crane lift (limited to 1800kg per lift) required the unit to be delivered in seven sections. The unit was shipped to the site in early February 2025.

Challenges and Expertise

The condition of the existing 1996 AHU was determined to be beyond refurbishment.

Crane lift weight restrictions requiring careful division of the AHU into seven large sections for transport and installation.

Strict height restrictions demanding precise engineering and design.

Daikin Applied (UK) expertly managed these complexities, ensuring a seamless installation process. Our skilled engineers also carried out site assembly, guaranteeing a high-quality, fully integrated solution.

About the AHU Solution

Airflow Capacity: 7.7 m3/s supply & extract

Heat Exchanger: High-efficiency counterflow plate heat exchanger

Fan System: EC fan array for enhanced energy efficiency

Construction Standard: T2 / TB2 to BS EN 1886

Outcome

The newly installed AHU ensured improved air quality and energy efficiency within the sports complex, delivering a robust, compliant, and long-lasting solution. Daikin Applied (UK)’s precise engineering and careful planning ensured that the unit met all spatial constraints while maintaining peak performance. With this upgrade, the University of Edinburgh now benefits from a reliable, high-efficiency ventilation system, enhancing the environment for athletes and visitors.
