Fire Retardant Coatings
Johnstone’s Trade offers two Flame Retardant Systems, simplifying the specification process and removing uncertainty when redecorating over existing coatings. These systems help maintain surfaces that inhibit the spread of flame and support compliance with:
BS EN 13501-1: The European standard for reaction to fire classification.
Approved Document B of the Building Regulations: Governs fire safety in buildings.
These systems are suitable for communal areas, escape routes, and refurbishment projects where fire performance must be maintained or upgraded.
Floor Coatings
Johnstone’s range of floor coatings is suitable for a wide variety of environments — from garages and workshops to commercial and industrial units. The portfolio includes:
Two-pack epoxy coatings (solvent- and water-based) for high durability, chemical resistance, and abrasion protection.
Quick Dry Polyurethane Flortred – a single-pack, fast-drying solution resistant to wear, scratches, oil, and grease.
Anti-slip additives to enhance safety in high-traffic or wet areas.
We also offer impregnating primers, damp-proof membranes, and high-build polyurethane finishes. As a FeRFA manufacturing member, our systems meet the highest standards in UK resin flooring and provide seamless, long-lasting protection.
Hygiene Coatings
Where hygiene is of paramount importance, products from the Hygiene Defence System provide long-lasting protection and easy maintenance. The range includes:
Microbarr Anti-Bacterial Matt and Eggshell – proven to inhibit MRSA and E. coli, suitable for healthcare, education, and food preparation areas.
Professional Sterilisation Wash – a surface treatment that inhibits mould and fungal growth.
Stop Mould – a durable emulsion containing a powerful fungicide, ideal for high-humidity environments such as kitchens, bathrooms, and changing rooms.
These coatings are compliant with ISO 22196 and aligned with Health Building Note (HBN) 00-10 Part B for healthcare environments.
Metal Defence
The Metal Defence System has been developed to maximise the life of metal surfaces while delivering a high-quality decorative finish. It includes:
Smooth Metal Paint – a primer and topcoat in one, offering up to 8 years’ protection for bare, previously painted, or rusted metal.
Quick Dry Metal Primer – fast-drying, anti-corrosive primer for ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
These systems are aligned with BS EN ISO 12944, the international standard for corrosion protection of steel structures.
PPG Protective Coatings
For large-scale infrastructure and industrial projects, PPG Protective Coatings deliver proven protection from corrosion, abrasion, high temperatures, and fire — while maintaining aesthetic performance.

Intumescent coatings for hydrocarbon and cellulosic fire protection
