Recent alterations to the west stand entrance at Chelsea FC include a striking StereoKinetic Wall® installation, surrounded by banners detailing the Club’s trophy successes. The much-photographed site is a popular attraction for fans and visitors from all over the world.
The 12.5m high panel of StereoKinetic Wall® forms an eye-catching backdrop above the imposing bronze statue in memory of Peter Osgood, ‘The King of Stamford Bridge’. It is made up of 10 separate panels decorated with 5,700 stainless steel tiles, which move dynamically in the wind. The tiles were wrapped in 3M external vinyl which was printed in two different shades of blue; each tile was then marked on the back with a grid reference to allow it to be assembled in the correct location to depict the heraldic lion which forms part of the club crest.
Lang+Fulton worked closely with the architect and designers to achieve the desired overall vision for the frontage, creating a solid graphic at the top fading to interspaced tiles at the base. They also collaborated with the appointed engineers to develop the best method for fixing the installation into the existing recess within the façade with minimal support. This required an accurate site survey to ensure the drawing and design were precise.
