STO KEEPS THINGS QUIET AT DERBY’S NEW MOORWAYS SPORTS VILLAGE

Sto acoustic products for walls and ceilings have been used to help create the perfect acoustic environment for a major new £42M leisure development in Derby. StoDécor Flex and StoSilent Distance were chosen for the walls of the new Moorways Sports Village, which features a 50-metre, 10-lane pool and a variety of associated amenities.

“The Sto products were specified by FaulknerBrowns Architects as they were able to satisfy a number of key requirements,” explains Sto’s project manager for acoustics, James Gosling. “Proven resistance to a humid and corrosive pool environment was obviously essential, but the products also had to be suitable for use on walls, at varying heights. StoDécor Flex was installed from 0 to 2.5 metres and StoSilent Distance from 2.5 metres up to 6 metres, for different parts of the building.”

The StoDécor Flex system, featuring an adjustable, metal sub-construction specifically designed for use in swimming pool areas, was first installed to the walls at low level. The SW150 sub-construction is epoxy powder-coated to provide the high degree of corrosion-resistance required for the warm and high humid environment. Sto’s unique StoVentec render carrier boards, made from 96% recycled expanded glass granulate, were fixed to the sub-construction to provide a smooth, even surface which allows a visually-attractive wall finish to be created – something which is an important requirement for this type of project.

Sto’s fibre-reinforced, lightweight base coat, embedded with Sto-Glass fibre mesh, was then applied to the StoVentec boards, with a final finish of StoDecosit plaster and StoColor Opticryl satin matt interior paint.

StoDécor Flex is an acrylic based system, which allows for movement within humid, damp atmospheres, and the mesh-reinforcement provides protection against the day-to-day knocks and impacts which wall surfaces are typically subjected to. StoDecosit combines the best properties of organic plasters and silicate plasters in a single product and is suitable for decorating walls to protect against mould and mildew. Made-up of 97% natural ingredients and preservative-free, StoDecosit is available in three grain sizes and in the full 800 colours of the StoColor system. The StoSilent Distance 110 acoustic wall system was also applied to the walls at a higher level, and to the ceiling within the top entrance zone to the water flumes, using the same SW150 epoxy-coated sub-construction. The system’s high-performance acoustic boards absorb sound and help to provide a relaxing environment, keeping noise to a minimum.

Sto’s acoustic products, installed by Nottinghamshire-based HKL Specialists Ltd, help to provide a clean, light and open atmosphere to this new pool building.

The 50-metre pool at the Derby City Council-owned complex incorporates moveable booms and flooring which allow it to be converted into three separate 25-metre swimming spaces. The building also houses a Water Park with two four-storey flumes, a teaching pool, plus a range of dry facilities including a gym, fitness studios, café and two soft-play areas.
