Wheatley Grange & Starlink

Wheatley Grange & Starlink

What was the Client Requirement

Apogee were instructed by a private buyer to provide a Full Utility and POC report for a residence in Wheatley Grange, Telford. The client required a one gigabyte EAD connection, and two 22KW EV charging points that were both economically and physically viable. Power and Fibre are becoming increasingly crucial for home buyers and can vastly change property values, due to the increase of electric cars and the development of new technologies.

What was the Apogee Solution?

By utilising its knowledge and experience with telecoms connections and management, Apogee was able to provide the client with a solution that satisfied their need. After reviewing the costs and how long it would take to install the connections Apogee provided a new solution; the installation of Starlink panels connected to satellites. For the electrical connection Apogee applied to NGED for an additional 42KVA which has been granted which also includes an upgrade to 3-phase power to the property.

Why was the client delighted?

The client was delighted to receive the report as Apogee was able to save the client money by installing Starlink panels to the residence so the client won’t have to pay to get an EAD connection straight to the house. The project was economically viable; and by reducing the amount of work needed to meet the requirements given to us and ensuring that all extra equipment is able to function in different conditions it was also physically viable. Apogee was able to establish a secure one gigabyte telecoms connection to the residence and an additional 42KVA for the property, which allows for more power to be supplied to the property while being more efficient, allowing for the installation of the EV charging points and heat pumps. The report was delivered efficiently, and all interaction with connection providers (DNOs, IDNOs) and other necessary parties was managed by Apogee, allowing the client to make an informed decision within their preferred timescale without the hassle of additional administrative tasks.

More About Starlink?

“Starlink is the world's most advanced satellite constellation using a low Earth orbit to deliver broadband internet capable of supporting streaming, online gaming, video calls and more.”
In comparison with standard satellite systems, the Starlink network boosts performance and reliability through decreasing signal travel distance via the operation of numerous small satellites in tightly integrated orbital shells. Being able to connect isolated rural areas to ships at sea, its aerial architecture enables coverage in areas that have historically been neglected by telecommunications infrastructure.

Apogee’s Head of IT Services and Service Development Mike Minton and Researcher Logan Minton took the Starlink equipment to the client residence to test it in different weather conditions and at different times in the day, to make sure that the equipment is capable of meeting the client’s needs. To test the Starlink Mike and Logan both responded to emails and undertook multiple online activities at the same time. They powered the Starlink with a Bluetti portable power station. Apogee have also been testing how well the Bluetti portable power station works in the field and while on the move if we are on site and need power for our equipment, but that is a story for another case study!
