The Benfield Centre for Sporting Excellence in Newcastle is one of the largest gymnastics centres in Europe. The industrial building measures to 2,336 sq. m. and is constructed with a steel frame. The property has suffered damage from water ingress on three separate occasions in the past. The gymnastic pits in particular were badly flooded.

After The Benfield Centre opened in 2001, the original waterproofing system failed and two attempts to resolve the problem were unsuccessful. It was clear that a specialist waterproofing contractor was required.

Methodology For Waterproofing The Sports Centre
NSBC (Newton Specialist Basement Contractor) Protectahome chose to use Newton System 500 products to rectify the building’s problems of water ingress. Newton System 500 is a fully maintainable waterproofing solution complying with BS8102 waterproofing regulations. Newton cavity drain membranes are highly resistant to water and have a life expectancy of thirty years providing a solution that is effective but also long lasting.

Result
The ease of installation meant the project was completed in a timely manner and the sports centre could re-open again swiftly. The Newton System 500 membrane installed holds BBA certification and Protectahome offer full Professional Indemnity (PI), giving the client peace of mind. NSBC Protectahome took full design liability and offered the client an extensive guarantee for the project.
