This presentation discusses the factors that contribute towards brittle fracture in steel structures and looks at previous failures and the reasons behind them. It compares the available design guidance from BS 5950-1 with that available in EN 1993-1-10, including the recommendations of the UK national annex and the non-conflicting complementary information available in PD6695-1-10. It demonstrates through worked example; the determination of subgrade with a view to simplifying material specification.
