After a brief introduction, the sustainability of steel construction is considered through the different stages of a building - preliminary design, design development, construction, operation and end of life.

Drawing on work by AECOM and Sweett Group on the Target Zero project and Gardiner & Theobald, Peter Brett Associates and MACE for comparative studies published in Building, it also gives an overview and examples of embodied carbon assessments, successful use of thermal mass and how to achieve the required BREEAM rating most cost effectively.
